A couple weeks ago I took the dog (Maki) for a drive. I had to run errands and he likes to ride in the car. It was a lovely afternoon, the sun was out but it was a cool day, birds were singing, squirrels were playing tag in the front yard. Even the elusive cotton-tailed bunny was out, nibbling on something tasty in the brush.
As I pulled to the end of the driveway, there sat a large squirrel. I said "Look Maki! Look at the squirrel!" And then I waved to the squirrel.
And he looked at me a waved back!
For one magical, spinning moment I was transported to a total Disney Moment. The animals, birds and bees were all my friends. I was like Aquaman, only not.
But then, as I continued to look on in delighted awe, I realized that he was just eating a large nut. And that he'd simply been scratching at his food. Damnit.
It was disappointing. But such is life sometimes. At least Maki enjoyed his car ride.
