I've been thinking about Rusty Beck and his room in Sharon Raydor's pad. In Season 2, we saw some personalized touches for Rusty, namely, a couple chess-themed posters. That's nice. But he's still sleeping under that girly comforter--and most of the other other knickknacks Sharon originally had in that room are still there.
Now, he's been with her for over a year. It's time Sharon blows the dust off her wallet & gets the kid some stuff that's to his taste. He can take them with him when he goes to college. Like, c'mon Sharon. Get with it already. At least get him a new blanket. Let him feel he's got some roots there, and isn't just camping out.
He seems to like plaid. Get him a nice, neutral-hued plaid:
As viewers, we don't know much about Rusty's likes. We know he's a chess whiz, and that's about it.
But I found some items that I thought could be fun for Rusty--and not bludgeon us to death with the fact that Rusty Plays Chess:
We'd know that these were purchased for Rusty. Either by him, or more likely, by Sharon. Either would underscore her love for him, and desire to have him feel truly accepted and not just accommodated. It struck me as odd, the longer Season 2 went on, that so few changes had been made to Rusty's primary living space: his bedroom. I mean, rooms change as people live in them & re-purpose them for their own needs. This is a teen-aged boy with big insecurities about being wanted. I think Sharon, in-Universe, would have updated his room, to underscore that it's about him, his room, not just her 'guest room' anymore.
And the functional chess board mounted on the wall? Thing is genius. Love the look of it. If I were a gracious loser chess didn't frustrate me , I'd seriously consider making one.
I mean, man, that's cool. Looks like plexi shelves divide each 'row', probably slotted in place--and then all your chessmen can be displayed. Have an on-going chess game--on your wall!
Dammit. I love it.
Maybe Dave Matthew's isn't cool for Rusty, but these four prints sure are!
