One thing I really enjoy engaging in with my girlfriend are mini taste-tests. We've gotten several different chocolate and chili candy bars in the past and had a taste-off. We've done this too with those tiny travel bottles of liqueur. It has been a relatively inexpensive way to inject a little bit of surprise and fun and sometimes small celebration into our lives. Especially when times have been lean.
Our new town is deeply invested in craft beers--which is great for my girl because she's always enjoyed good beer. In fact, good beer is one of the ways in which we met and established the first tentative steps toward friendship.
I typically prefer wine, although I too have found a great variety of wonderful craft beers here. But recently I thought it would be an amusing exercise to start shopping around for what I'm calling "Disaster Wines."
These are labels or names (or both) that depict terrible things. I'm limited to red wine only. Wretched white wine incident many years ago that has completely taken that vast swath of wines off the table. I'm not really bound by price...except since this is a lark, and in keeping with our past frugal tradition, I don't want to spend more than $30 for a bottle. Most of these have been in the $20 or less range. And I only buy occasionally as I'm at a grocery shop or package store--so the Disaster Wines collection can grow over time without denting our finances.
I'm not sure how we'll eventually tackle the taste test. Originally I imagined this as a party scenario, but I don't know many folk here. So we might just do what we've done before--a taste test for just we two, maybe try a bottle a week & review our experiences? If so, I'd love to post those reviews here. But for now, the gathering continues...I'm keeping eyes peeled for fun Bottles of Disaster!
Besides being an irreverent approach to wine, I believe we'll probably have some happy accidents. I know we'll be trying a few wines we typically wouldn't, who knows what our palates will find delightful?
